[Never put it past Rey to defend what is a very impressive star ship. Ships like this make her feel at home in a way that she still isn't all that used to and the fact that there's a chance to have a forest like the one on Ajan Kloss inside it kind of makes it the very best of both worlds, to Rey. On that planet she had set up her own little space protected from the elements, separate from the rest of the Resistance just enough that only the people who really wanted to visit her would do so but allowing her to watch over the camp from up high all the same. She had had her simple cot, her collection of Jedi texts, and a space for BB-8. It had been perfect.
Why couldn't she make something similar here? He's said himself it's free space.]
Just there, [And she points with the staff to a little clearing just far enough from his tree where there are two more an appropriate distance apart. It's far that they wouldn't be able to speak without shouting, obscured just enough but a handful of flowering bushes that if she set up a hammock just so they wouldn't even have to see each other.] If I put a hammock there and promised not to bother you would you object?
[She finally looks back at him now, apparently done with staking the place out and ready to do that thing most civilized people do when having conversations with other people.
You know. Looking at them. Paying actual attention to them. Hurray for gremlins.]
It's metal walls all around, isn't it? [ impressive as it is, it's being contained. mal's not about to say it isn't beyond his wildest imagination, but it's also nothing like home.
and home, well, he's not actually going back to that any time soon unless he succeeds and then-- he's not sure how it works. if it's him that's going back, if it's something magical entirely and not him at all.
he looks over by where she's pointing and for a moment wishes he'd taken the spot, it's covered and pretty private. he hasn't actually claimed a space for himself, but it's not a bad idea. ] I wouldn't. I wasn't planning on making this my permanent spot but I can avoid where you set your hammock up when I do.
Someone told me the weather here changes so you might want to take that into consideration with your set up. [ mal's current tree's shit for a rainy day, which is why it's not permanent. ]
[She wants to argue that, to say that this ship is enormous and there are plenty of places to go, plenty of things to do and being here is hardly being trapped-
But that's her experience of space, isn't it? It had been Jakku that had felt like a prison for her, the endless desert the place that had contained her, and it had been flying that set her free.
So it's easier to let it go with a barely noticeable nod, to take in the rest of what he says. With a glance upwards, she frowns at the sunny sky.]
Did they say how often that happens? Or if we can program it so it stays nice in here?
[Now that she doesn't need the staff she slings the strap on it back over her shoulder so it sits securely across her back once more, shifts the swords so that she's holding one in each hand and the basket of her food is held securely in the crook of her elbow.
Two practice swords, a picnic basket, and a staff. Definitely what you need for an early morning walk.]
No one said anything about... programs... [ it's said in a way that makes it clear that mal wouldn't really understand what 'program it' means.
he reaches up to rub the back of his neck, almost sheepish.
then his attention falls to what's more important, the bounty in her arms. she seems more than capable of carrying it all, but mal's not completely oblivious to what manners look like sometimes. ] Need help carrying any of that?
[Oh. He does say it like it's entirely alien to him and she can't help thinking of Finn, of how awful he is at all things related to technology, and she has to bite down on her lip to keep from smiling. It's charming, that's all, but he doesn't need to know that.
And when he offers her his help her first instinct is to turn him down, to make up some excuse and slip away, but she hesitates as she's about to do just that. If they are going to be sharing a metal box, as he says, it would be better to form relationships with the people inside it with her. She knows she has a long way to go in terms of learning to be a people person and after all, how is she supposed to get better about it if she's always defaulting to being as closed off as she had been on Jakku? Jedi aren't like that.
So she nods, holding out the basket of food to him.]
I suppose I do owe you breakfast after waking you up so early.
[ he's almost surprise she offers him the basket, but mal takes it when she does because he's true to his word and the offers he makes. plus, there's food in it so he's not about to miss a chance to look over and perhaps judge her choices.
he's got a few stashes of food hidden away already, nothing perishable, and all of this looks good but wouldn't be something he adds to the hoards.
if she can tell he's judging, well, he offers a nod of approval after a moment. ] I wasn't going to ask for compensation but since you offered... [ he grins, perhaps a little cheeky about it. ] I won't say no to breakfasst.
I'm more used to a bartering system. We'll call it a trade.
[She likes his smile, she finds herself realizing a little abruptly, and before it's something she's entirely aware of she's giving him one in return. Hers isn't cheeky at all, more subdued and small but warm all the same, and she waves one of the swords at him to motion for him to follow her.]
Rey. Do you think you wait until I've finished my training to eat or should we just set up the picnic right away?
not because ravka doesn't have currency but because meager army wages don't get one very far. ] I can wait. [ he shrugs a shoulder, but he is still curious about what food she's got. ] I could always eat but I'm used to waiting to eat too.
It hits a little too close to home, a little too hard, and it makes her immediately reconsider.]
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to eat first.
[She leads the way to her little clearing, a small area near the stream where the lush grass turns into one big, smooth rock that's been perfect for practicing her forms on, the two trees where she intends to hang that hammock. She takes a seat first, setting the weapons aside as she settles down onto the soft grass rather than the stone, and motions for him to sit across from her and to hopefully put the basket down between them.]
It's light, but we can go and get more later.
[In the basket he'll find two thick, dense loaves of bread, more than enough fruit for two people, and a giant hunk of cheese that she's fairly sure she can cut at least vaguely into two equal halves.]
