Personality:
+ LOYAL: Malyen is extremely loyal, especially to those he considers close to him. While this centers around Alina, this isn't limited to her. Mal is willing to go above and beyond for those he cares about, his friends and found family. If they're in danger, Mal's more than ready to come to their defense even if he doesn't have a plan. Loyalty and trust, once earned, are very important to Mal. This is why he feels very betrayed when he believes Alina lied about being a Grisha and has abandoned her old life in favor of the nobility in the Little Palace due to Genya never sending Alina’s letters to him.
+ BRAVE: Malyen is brave, willing to storm into danger for the sake of a mission. He leads his friends into the Fjerden forest even though he is afraid, heads into the Fold when his unit is reassigned to cross with a look of bravery on his face. Even if he is afraid, he puts on a brave face and knows he needs to do what needs to be done even if it may not end well for him.
+ CARING: Though he tries to cultivate a cocky, charming and tough guy image, Malyen is a caring person. As a child, he used to rescue rabbits from traps in the forest to prevent them from becoming dinner for the local village or the orphanage. This means while he tries to be tough, even those who annoy Mal quickly worm their way into his heart and may find themselves on the receiving end of his own brand of worry and loyalty. Mal feels responsible for the well-being of those he cares for, which is why he carries guilt from leading his friends Mikhail and Dubrov on the expedition to find Morozova's stag in the Fjerden wilderness. On this mission, both of his friends were killed but Mal survived.
- REBELLIOUS: While Mal is a soldier and one that follows orders, heading into the Fjerden wilderness and enemy territory though he is scared, he does have a rebellious streak. This can be shown by the fact he does defect from the First Army to go search for Alina after she runs away from the Little Palace and even before that when he punches a commanding officer to get thrown in the barrack's jail cell to find her. If following orders doesn't make sense or if authority figures aren't doing what Mal feels is right, he's more than happy to tell them to "fuck off" and do what needs to be done.
- IMPULSIVE: Sometimes with Mal, it’s act first and think later. Especially in the heat of the moment. On the skiff, before Kaz could come up with a plan on how to handle the situation that wouldn’t get everyone killed, Mal was already heading up with his pistol drawn to try to stop the Darkling. The spur of the moment decisions can also be seen when he volunteers to go look for the mythical Morozova's stag without considering the possibility it could be a dead-end. Mal sees an opportunity to reunite with Alina, someone dear to him, and he takes it.
- QUICK TO ANGER: Malyen is pretty quick to get overrun by his emotions; it's quite easy to annoy and rile up, to get on his bad side as a result of it. It takes a few words from the Darkling about Mal dying and why he won’t kill him, for Mal to lose his temper and try to attack him while in chains. It's also not uncommon to see Mal off in the corner, glaring at someone who's annoyed him; especially if they're getting too friendly with someone he considers close to him. He's quite like a possessive tracking dog, really. Mal's impulsiveness is run by his anger, his fears. He's pretty quick to panic, even if he looks put together and will try to keep his composure.
Powers/Abilities:
‣ Mal is a talented tracker that can find anything with a heartbeat; he is able find magical creatures like Morozova’s stag due to hearing a high pitched noise when they are near. That said, when it comes to animals and humans he is an exceptional tracker, he has had a natural affinity toward it since he was a child. While this is a skill he has honed with age and practice, the natural affinity is related to the fact Mal is not a mere human being.
‣ He is an amplifier for Grisha, though he is unaware of this, due to being a descendant of Ilya Morozova (he’s also the Darkling’s great grand nephew.). Holding on to Mal would cause a grisha’s powers to be amplified. If he were to be killed by a Grisha, they could use a token taken from him to also amplify their powers without needing his presence.
‣ A skilled brawler, Mal can hold his own in a physical fight and partakes in fighting rings to earn extra money in the Ravkan army.
‣ Mal is a good marksman. Mal knows how to use a gun, a bow, and pistols from training
during his First Army training. He is an excellent shot.
‣ While he is by no means a medic, Malyen received very basic medical training on how to treat wounds in the field. He can identify herbs and plants that have medicinal properties and use them in a pinch.
Regret: Taking Alina to find the Morozova Stag, resulting in them being captured and the Darkling killing the amplifier.
Suitability: Aside from being an excellent tracker that would be able to help the team track any magical being or creature with a heartbeat in the case they make a run for it, Mal brings a soldier’s attitude to the team. A soldier follows their orders through the end. Even when he is afraid of something, if he knows that it will serve the mission, Mal is willing to do what needs to be done even if it’s putting his own life in danger or involves getting his hands dirty. Mal is particularly desperate to stop Alina from being enslaved by the Darkling, as well as the man obtaining enough power by using her to destroy whole cities, so he will be very keen on accomplishing the missions in any way possible.
While Mal’s going to be doing his best to ensure those he cares about aren’t hurt for the sake of the missions, not everyone from these worlds they visit or even members of the stations are people he cares about.
