andy and i took it down. [ and yes, he's very smug about it. ]
i did. wonders of modern technology and all that. and something called the force. [ he's already been on his way to the simulation room, so really it's no long before he's walking up to where he sees the bonfire.
mal's been to shorelines along rivers in ravka but he's never been to the true sea. the first vast ocean he'd seen had been on the train to vrefesea. the sand under his bared feet is warm, not too hot, and he likes the warmth of the sunlight on his face. it's not real, he knows, but he'll take this over the steel ceilings of the station or an enclosed train.
he'd been dressed in military issued trousers and a white linen shirt when he'd walked in, the shirt is already tucked into his belt. mal's not shy about skin, even with his chest littered with scars from brawls, skirmishes, arrowheads and bullets. when he spots clarice, he smiles and spreads out his arms before offering a salute. ]
Reporting in for s'mores and all in one piece. [ if he pronounces 's'mores' wrong, well, he's never heard it out loud. ]
[ the fake sun has already begun to set, but there's still enough lingering warmth from the day that the chill of the night hasn't really settled in yet. besides, with a raging bonfire nearby, there's no great risk of catching colds any time soon.
clarice turns as she spots a figure walking towards her, lips pulling into a reflexive smile. the salute has her rolling her eyes as she stands, absently dusting off sand from her jeans. unlike many of the others who've partaken in the beach, she hadn't bothered to look for any appropriate attire, remaining in her torn denims and worn graphic tee. ]
S'mores, [ she corrects, while holding one out for him in offering. it's a sticky, melted mess, which obviously means it's delicious.
with the firelight nearby, there's more than enough light left that she can get a proper (and then some) look at him. ]
Congrats on making it out in one piece, though. Sorry I couldn't see you being a badass.
[ mal repeats the word, tucking it away with the expanse of new words he's learned since he arrived.
s'mores, toilet, blaster gun, the force.
and now also 'badass.' ] I assume being a 'badass' is good. I'll have to do it again so you can see. [ he chuckles, taking the offered sweet before sitting down beside clarice near the fire with his legs sprawled out in front of him.
it's warm enough that he doesn't see reason to put the shirt back on even with the setting sun. ] Maybe without the kaiju or some other giant monster. Could live without seeing another one of those.
[ but that's not as important as the s'more he shoves in his mouth in one go. which, saints, is probably the best thing he's had in all of his life even with the mess. ] But can't live without these.
Thanks for enlightening me. [ not sarcastic, no, and maybe playful still. mal grins, taking a moment to savor the sweet after it's gone. ] I guess if we can't manage honey cakes, we'll always have s'mores.
[ or at least as long as the supplies last.
mal looks back at the bonfire and then out toward the faked ocean, the sun's set fully now and while he can hear people still amongst the water. ] So other than make s'mores, what did your beach day entail?
How come? Why can't you swim, that is. Didn't want to learn? [ ravka's full of lakes and rivers. while mal's never seen the sea, not until their last mission, he's gotten the chance to swim during hot summers training with the first army. ]
I could teach you. [ he offers without thinking, glancing back at the water. ]

Delicious, right? [ she knew she could count on mal to enjoy food as much as she does. ] You're welcome.
[ she leans back then, hands digging into the warm sand as her legs stretch out to do the same. ]
Fortunately it's a lot easier to make than a honey cake. No baking required. Just the ingredients and an open flame.

You're looking at it.
[ she makes a vague gesture to herself, sitting there doing nothing in the sand. following his line of sight, she nods towards the water. ]
I'm not much of a swimmer. [ pause. ] Since I can't swim and all.
